How might we design a smart meter that represents modern reliable electricity?
SparkMeter offers comprehensive low-cost metering solutions for everything from rural micro-grids to existing urban central grid utilities. Their products help make access to electricity possible in hard-to-reach places and under-served markets.
Their existing meter was an off the shelf model from a Chinese factory that they had modified to fit 2 different PCB boards. The meter did not pass drop test, had a difficult assembly process and possessed no brand language specific to the company.
In re-designing a new meter, Sparkmeter was seeking an IP65 rated design that would not only provide a rugged user experience but also serve as a selling point to buyers. We worked on improving the assembly process and developing new solutions for existing problems.
Sketching forms I focused on simple modern lines that represented innovative technology. The client was eager for a new assembly. I explored multiple assembly options that could achieve the IP65 rating.
