How might we give consumers the versatility of a cordless stick vacuum while maintaining the power of an upright corded vacuum?

Based on user feedback from the initial prototype, buyers felt the vacuum looked too heavy to be use as a hand vac. I explored forms that softened the design language in an attempt to make the vacuum feel more approachable and easier to use.

Working with the engineering team we made a series of modifications as we moved through the development process. As changes were made on the engineering side, modifications had to be made to the design such as which buttons were to be used and placement internal components.

Through this print we were able to determine

  1. Whether the size of the hand-vac was within reason for people to use with one-hand

  2. Comfort level of the handle

  3. Accessibility of the buttons from the handle

  4. Relationship of aesthetic between hand-vac and the nozzle

“Powerful”

Our stakeholders desired a vacuum that exemplified the word “powerful.” It was important to come to a clear definition of what this word meant to everyone in order to achieve the company’s definition of success. I encouraged our stakeholders to think differently about how “powerful” was defined by modern trends.
